In 1998, AOI initiated the Abstinence Education Program for Teens, funded by the OhioDepartment of Health and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. In just four months, the program was presented in three sessions and included videos, birthparent speakers, student/leader interaction, role-plays and other student involvement activities. Immediately after each program, students were asked to complete an evaluation.

Across gender, age/grade and race sub-segments, the majority of students who participated in theAOI Abstinence Education Program for Teens indicated they had a better understanding of the causes of teen sexual activity. They felt they understood both the risks of becoming sexually active as well as the harmful effects of sex before marriage, including consequences of bearing a child out-of-wedlock. Likewise, they understood that abstinence before marriage is the bestchoice. Importantly, these students felt that, through this program, they had learned techniques that could help them resist pressure to have sex. And, in what might be considered the acid test for any program, nearly three-quarters of the students who participated in the program said they wanted their friends to participate also.
