| Results | Before the Health Foundation planning grant was awarded, a group of individuals, led by the Educational Service Center, met to discuss methods of supporting the academic success of children in Butler County Schools. The group identified the need for improved access to health care for children. The New Miami Local School District was identified as the neediest area of Butler County, and the possible site for a school-linked health center. The health center was envisioned as one strategy to improve school attendance and reduce barriers to learning. The planning process resulted in securing a building near the school, provided and maintained by the Village of New Miami. The Butler County Commission advocated for Community Development Block Grant funds for significant renovations and furnishings to the building. Renovations were designed and completed, and funds from the Health Foundation Planning Grant were utilized to supply and equip the Center. Through the planning process, an Advisory Group was formed. The Group, comprised of community members, providers and school personnel, provides input into the policies and procedures which affect the operations of the Health Center. In this way, the community is assured that care provided through the Center reflects the values and intentions of the community it serves. The Health Center is currently recruiting a Family Nurse Practitioner to staff the Center, along with a clerical support person. We hope to open the doors to students by the mid-April, 2001. We believe the Center will become an asset to the health and academic success of children of the New Miami Local School District, and a cherished resource to the people of the Village of New Miami. |
