Lead poisoning is the number one environmental disease effecting children. Lead poisoning affects brain development in children, leaving them prone to educational frustrations, juvenile delinquency, and an inability to participate fully as working adults. CLEARCorps' approach to combat this 100% preventable childhood disease is community awareness and low-cost lead reduction techniques in housing.

The program recruits 10 AmeriCorps members annually, who are trained and certified to deliver training and perform lead reduction in area housing. Corpsmembers understand the mission of service and become proficient at training and lead reduction. Adults who receive training will identify an action they will take to reduce childhood lead poisoning, and children under six are protected from lead hazards in housing.

The CLEARCorps team will:

  • provide training to 400 adults and 1,000 children in the Greater Cincinnati area about the causes, effects, and techniques to prevent childhood lead poisoning;
  • protect 60 children under age six by controlling lead hazards at the home of 30 low-income families; and
  • provide technical assistance to all area residents, property owners, agencies, and governments on lead poisoning prevention, including safe work practices.
