Results On October 28 and 29, 1999, the Caregiver Assistance Network sponsored by Catholic Social Services of Southwestern Ohio presented two full-day workshops on the topic "The Power of Kindness." The presenter was Wendy Lustbader, MSW, a mental health counselor and an affiliate assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work. She lectures nationally on topics relating to chronic illness, aging, and the needs of family caregivers. In addition, she has written two books, Taking Care of Aging Family Members (with Nancy Hooyman) and Counting on Kindness: The Dilemmas of Dependency, both published by the Free Press.

Attendees at the October, 1999, workshops learned that kindness and honest communication can transform difficult relationships between those giving and receiving care. Stories from Ms. Lustbader’s own experience highlight issues of anger, compassion in the face of criticism, fear of dependency, and maintaining the balance in professional roles.

Nearly 250 people were able to attend these highly-rated workshops, which were made possible through the Health Foundation’s grant and through the cosponsorship of nine hospitals and community agencies.
