| Results | In mid September 1998, two part-time therapists were hired to reduce the waiting list of children needing services. Shortly after, one of the therapists left and the remaining therapist became full-time. The goals of the grant were to work with 37-70 children and provide 240 hours of therapy. During the grant period, the new therapist saw 41 children and provided 298 hours of the therapy. The position is now being supported through billable hours. |

| Results | On October 28 and 29, 1999, the Caregiver Assistance Network sponsored by Catholic Social Services of Southwestern Ohio presented two full-day workshops on the topic "The Power of Kindness." The presenter was Wendy Lustbader, MSW, a mental health counselor and an affiliate assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work. She lectures nationally on topics relating to chronic illness, aging, and the needs of family caregivers. In addition, she has written two books, Taking Care of Aging Family Members (with Nancy Hooyman) and Counting on Kindness: The Dilemmas of Dependency, both published by the Free Press. Attendees at the October, 1999, workshops learned that kindness and honest communication can transform difficult relationships between those giving and receiving care. Stories from Ms. Lustbader’s own experience highlight issues of anger, compassion in the face of criticism, fear of dependency, and maintaining the balance in professional roles. Nearly 250 people were able to attend these highly-rated workshops, which were made possible through the Health Foundation’s grant and through the cosponsorship of nine hospitals and community agencies. |

| Results | Because of the matching grant support, Catholic Social Services was eligible for a van for the Northern Brown County Senior Center. The center provides transportation to and from medical appointments for its senior citizens. The new van joins an older one at the center, allowing staff to transport more senior citizens to their appointments without overworking one van. |
