Results The Miami University Psychology Clinic and its Center for School-Based Mental Health Programs has been awarded a school-based mental health services, education, and research grant, for the period July 1, 1999-June 30, 2001. The purpose of the grant, which is being implemented in the New Miami School District and the Talawanda City School District together with a companion grant from the Butler County Mental Health Board, is to develop, implement, and examine the effectiveness of programs that reduce barriers to learning and enhance healthy psychological development of K-12th grade students, address primary prevention, provide early direct intervention for identified children, and offer treatment for children with severe/chronic mental health problems. Outreach to additional schools in Butler County also is being offered.

The primary initiatives funded by the grant are:

  • prevention and intervention staffing for each of the schools in the two identified school districts (including particular focus on violence prevention);
  • a teacher consultant program focusing on mental health issues in the classroom; and
  • mental health inservice and continuing education activities for school personnel.

Thus far, grant initiatives are being received enthusiastically in both school districts
