| Results | This planning grant enabled the founders of the new Recovery Resource Center (RRC) to develop a board of directors and a detailed strategic plan for accomplishing its mission to provide a centralized referral agency, outreach, training and meeting space for people needing alternative self-help recovery groups. We have also conducted a survey among substance abuse treatment providers to determine support and initial partners for this project. An overwhelming majority of providers are interested in having alternative methods, different from Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, available for their clients. We will provide a training curriculum based on solid research, which demonstrates a need for a variety of recovery methods. RRC will train treatment providers and start groups for the following abstinence-based models now active nationally and in Greater Cincinnati: Women for Sobriety, Life Ring Secular Recovery, Self-Management And Recovery Training (SMART), and Rational Recovery. As a result of this grant, RRC has been asked to prepare a class curriculum for The University of Cincinnati, which will be used to teach these models. The VA Hospital has also asked RRC to partner in a research project and a board member has been asked to do "grand rounds" at Howard University Hospital on the SMART Recovery program. |

| Results | In the belief that no single recovery program works for all persons overcoming alcohol and drug abuse, Cincinnati-based Recovery Resource Center, Inc. (RRCI) has formed the nation’s first and only non-profit agency providing several self-help abstinence-based recovery programs working to help persons break alcohol and drug habits. The center serves residents of Boone, Butler, Campbell, Clermont, Dearborn, Hamilton, Kenton, and Warren Counties. Since opening its office in Roselawn in December, Recovery Resource Center has become home to several free abstinence-based programs, including Women For Sobriety, LifeRing Secular Recovery, Self-Management And Recovery Training (SMART Recovery), and Rational Recovery. A new website, http://rrci.net, provides users with resources and soon will link them to a full array of national resources. A new library at RRCI includes a computer, books, journals, group promotional literature, and research studies. Usage is free. Nearly a dozen presentations have been made to professional agencies and organizations. Four hundred community leaders have received a letter of introduction and RRCI’s new newsletter. News media have been supportive and provided at least 10 radio, television, and newspaper reports. |
