Results Supports to Encourage Low-income Families (SELF) is Butler County’s community action agency that provides job training, education, resources, and other support to low-income families. In partnership with the Lincoln Heights Health Care Connection (LHHCC), SELF conducted seven education forums in 1999 on the link between accessible health care for families and a stable, reliable workforce. Business representatives were targeted for the messages. Focus was placed on Ohio’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and how participants can support the related outreach activity in Butler County.

A committee of seven representatives of Greater Cincinnati organizations, including a chamber of commerce, planned and implemented the workshops and produced the related materials. Extensive efforts to recruit businesses and participants preceded the workshops. A total of 350 businesses were represented at the forums.

A survey was administered to the business representatives at three of the forums. Of the 51 responses, 71% found the information at the forum to be helpful, with an additional 20% finding the information somewhat helpful. Businesses consistently reported that they would use the knowledge to share with co-workers, employees, and employers and that they would refer individuals to the program.
