| Results | The Assertive and Responsible Teens (ART) Program is an after-school program sponsored by Services United for Mothers and Adolescents (SUMA) that is designed to help males and females ages 9-14 develop health attitudes and life-style choices and build self-esteem, problem-solving skills, and values while teaching abstinence. To date, ART has attended six community fairs, presented its program in seven social service agencies, community groups, and schools, and has held four open house sessions to recruit participants and to increase the public’s awareness of our programs. The ART program also served 125 youth during the first session. ART has a varied curriculum that helps increase participants’ knowledge of self, spirituality, responsibility, culture, and their importance to their family and the community. Participants also go on community and educational field trips to learn more about themselves and their environment. Role-playing exercises and group discussion also help participants understand their personal values and the role these values play in decision making. ART also helps increase participants’ understanding of the physical, emotional, psychological, and social changes that occur during adolescence and offer abstinence education, assertiveness training, personal responsibility lessons, and leadership skill development. Preventative personal care and hygiene are also discussed, as are ways to access community-based health care. |
