The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati developed the Regional Primary Care Access Initiative (RPCAI) in response to the need for stabilizing the safety net, or the medical and dental providers who devote all or a sufficient portion of their resources to serve the uninsured.  The RPCAI was also created due to the growth of uninsured and immigrant populations. There is also a need for affordable insurance coverage options for low-income working families. The goal of the RPCAI is to achieve 100% access to primary care within our region.

In 2003, the Health Foundation began working with healthcare providers, and community leaders to increase primary care access, specialty services in underserved areas, and explore affordable coverage options. The goal of the RPCAI is to achieve 100% access to primary care within our region.

To accomplish the impressive goal of 100% access, the Health Foundation has gathered a diverse group of stakeholders who will provide leadership in the development of an integrated delivery system capable of closing the health care access and service gaps. This will also create stability for the safety net providers.

At the end of the multi-year RPCAI, the Health Foundation expects to:

• increase the number of children and adults who have a medical home (a regular source of medical and dental care)
• reduce the number of uninsured
• increase appropriate use of primary care resources
