School-based health centers (SBHCs) are an important part of the Health Foundation's School-Aged Children's Healthcare focus area. We have invested over $10 million in 15 SBHCs in our service area.

We developed two studies to look at the impact of SBHCs. The first study evaluated how SBHCs affect students' health status, use of healthcare services and attendance. The second study looked at how the healthcare costs for students enrolled in the Medicaid program changed before and after the centers opened

• School-Based Health Centers Improve Children’s Health Status News release--August 25, 2005—Results from the latest study released by the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati show that School-based Health Centers (SBHCs) keep kids healthy and in school while improving their overall health status. 
• A Prescription for Success: Executive Summary--A high level summary of the findings from the studies.
• A Prescription for Success: How School-Based Health Centers Affect Health Status and Healthcare Use and Cost--A more indepth summary of the two studies, including details on results and methodologies.

• Evaluation of Healthcare Costs and Utilization among Medicaid Recipients in Schools with School-Based Health Centers Final Report (August 2005)--This study was designed to measure the cost effectiveness of these SBHCs. This study focused on four in three urban and one rural Ohio school districts in Greater Cincinnati. Two Ohio schools without SBHCs, one urban and one rural, served as comparison schools. The study period for this report covered five-and-a-half years, from September 1997 to February 2003 (5.5 calendar years). This study looked at the 5,506 students who were enrolled in the six schools and in the Ohio Medicaid program.
• Evaluation of Health Outcomes of Students Using School-Based Health Centers Public Survey Report (August 2005)--This survey consisted of all students enrolled at eight selected public schools with SBHCs, their parents, and school staff.
